How can mobile apps increase sustainability and the overall quality of life?

Creation of a social game related to the mobile phones LCA

The idea is to create a game which will get people hooked on, making them have funny and entertaining moments while they are learning about the environmental and social issues that are behind the mobile phones.

The problem

After the researches we have done in the first phase of the project, we have seen that there is a lack of information about the manufacturing process and the use of mobile phones. People do not know which different phases are before and after they get the mobile phone on the store, and they do not care about it. That’s why, communication and awareness is one of our goals.
In the other hand, there is the goal of doing business. It is going to be a way of making money for Enviu.

Possible solution

The principal aim of the creation of the game is to attract people and build a community; a social game where the users can learn new skills and be informed about the mobile phone life cycle, where they can communicate with other users and compete between them.
A fast, agile, real time play.
At the moment we are making a research about the already existing games in Facebook, iPhones, … apps and analyzing which are the most successful ones and why. The target is also been analyzed.
It is also now time for the creativity! Content, characters, scenarios, … have to be decided to become this game a success!

Hi Mikel,

Can you tell us a bit more about the specifics of your idea? I get the overall thought, but what story lines do you have in mind?

After being doing some researches and brainstromings I have come to the final concept.

The principal idea of the concept is to build a mobile phone factory. The user has to become the most eco-friendly mobile phone manufacturer with the activities that he/she does.

The user will have the opportunity to personalize the profile and the company as he/she will be the owner of the factory. There will be the chance to define the person characteristics choosing the gender, the facial features, the clothes … and different parameters for the factory such as materials, components … There will be basic amount of money to start gaming and working, then the user will have to earn money.

Each user independently has to build the best mobile phone company and he/she will be responsible for the actions, benefits and repercussions that the company will suffer. As in the social games the members of the community can help each other but they are also competing between each other, because there will be extra bonus and other gifts for the best company.

The game is going to have two main parts. In one part will be the social community of the users, in which each one will have to build his/her own mobile phone company. On the other hand there will be the game software, which is going to control the game;, the one that is going to value the level of the sustainability and the positive and the negative activities that the users do. It will be the sale points; the one that is going to buy the phones that the users are going to manufacture.

The game works as a close system. The first activity of the user is to build a simple factory with all the components that are required: raw materials, machinery, building … in order to be able to manufacture an amount of mobile phones and be able to sell them to the phone store. After the manufacturing process, the sale point will buy the phones that the users have built. The mobile phones will cost more or less depending on the sustainable level which will depend on the activities and decisions that the user has taken during the manufacturing process.

On the other hand, the users also have to buy the mobile phones in order to use them in the phone usage time to make calls, send text messages, charge the mobile phone...
The phones that are bought by the users will have a period which is the products’ lifetime. After this period, the user will have to decide what he/she does with the end of life of the products. There will be the possibility to throw to the landfill, to recycle, to reuse or donate to other people or organizations. With the last three choices the system will continue and the game player will have to decide what to do with the components.

There will be punishments for the activities that are not socially and environmentally sustainable. It will also have repercussions in the amount of money they have and the sustainable level.

This is the general concept. What do you think about it? Now I am working on the procedure and the phases of the game, describing the story and the design.

Hi Mikel,

Nice idea! Will the mobile phone factory be only virtual? Or will it really produce phones that will be used?

In other words: is it real, or a Tamagotchi? :)

Dear Mikel,

My name is Fahad and I am part of Enviu's feedback team. A group of experts (from the telecom sector and the Enviu team) has discussed your idea. Our feedback could help in bringing your idea to the next level. With this feedback we would like to round off the idea generation phase and freshly kick off the concept phase!

First of all thank you for participating in the OMG project. We appreciate that you have taken the time to post your idea on this platform.

We think your idea is interesting. In order for you to bring this idea into reality you would need a developer and posssibly partnership with a company that is good at social games. We believe that this idea should be linked to social media rather than a phone application. Also, the game concept should be defined more clearly, what is it about and why would people want to play it?

Thanks,

Enviu Feedback Team
